Ecuador is covered in its eastern third by the Amazon. Mythical name, necessarily associated with the terms lungs of the planet or biodiversity, in its western end it is proved to be very varied and extremely interesting. From the foothill rich forests to the black water lagoons of the Rio Napo basin, through the hilly Terra Firme or the white waters of the great rivers, we will go through all ecosystems present in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Each step along the way will be characterized by such an abundance of wildlife that the final tally may well remain a defining moment of your birding career.
Day 1. The trip will begin in Quito, the country's capital and the ancient capital of the northern part of the Inca empire.
Days 2-3-4. We will begin our journey to the east and the mythical Amazon basin. The Wild Sumaco lodge, our first destination, has a list of birds of almost 460 species. The foothill forests east of the Andes where it is located are among the most diverse tropical ecosystems in the world. We will explore the various trails around this famous lodge, adjacent to the Sumaco-Galeras National Park and overlooked by the Sumaco Volcano in search of the most remarkable species along with the more common ones.
Days 5-6-7. Our journey will continue in the heart of the Amazon, hot spot of biodiversity. We chose to settle in the rustic but comfortable Gareno lodge. Located at the heart of the Huaorani territory, it is surrounded by one of the most pristine Terra Firme forest in Ecuador. This purely amazonian ecosystem is breathtakingly rich and diverse and we should have ample opportunity to verify it. We will roam the trails around the lodge looking for such special birds as the dazzling Fiery Topaz or the humongous Harpy Eagle.
Days 8-9-10-11-12-13. We will embark on the last part of our trip from the Amazonian town of Coca. Our trip will end up in style with a stay in one of the best birding lodge on the planet: Sani lodge. Whether canoeing on oxbow-lakes or blackwater streams surrounded by Varzea forest or walking through pristine Terra Firme forest, we will have a unique opportunity to visit some of the most bird-rich ecosystems on the planet. Moments to be remembered for a lifetime should include the sunrise from a canopy tower more than 30 meters above ground, the visit to a clay-lick where many colorful parrot species come every day in search of clay or the discovery of a very peculiar and typical habitat, the islands of large Amazonian rivers where species not found anywhere else can be observed. Everything will be made to provide you with the closest thing to a perfect birding experience imaginable.
